Bruce Scott enjoys his work as a teacher.

Now his dedication has been recognised by Skills4Work, a group working to raise the profile of industry training.

Mr Scott, who teaches mechanical engineering at Waitakere College, received a $1000 cash prize at the organisation's Skills in Action Auckland regional awards.

"I was very honoured to get it," he says.

The Whangaparoa resident first trained as a fitter and turner before being put in charge of apprentices at the naval base,

He later switched careers and went to teachers training college.

Mr Scott started teaching at Waitakere College in 1979 but has also taught at Northcote and Henderson High.

"I love teaching engineering," he says.

"It's my joy."

Mr Scott builds in his spare time and has done much of the fencing and retaining work around his home.

"It's my hobby," he says.

"I never sit around reading - I like to be out there doing things."
