A new 10 classroom block at Liston College is named after a Catholic priest who was murdered in El Salvador.

The Archbishop Romero building officially opened this week and replaces a number of prefabs.

College principal Chris Rooney says the death of Oscar Romero, who was shot and killed while saying mass in 1980, prompted an outcry for reform in El Salvador.

"He was a reluctant leader who took a stand for justice for people who didn't have a voice," Mr Rooney says.

He says the new rooms, which will house the maths, English, religious education and humanities departments, were needed to cater for the growing number of students.

They were built as part of a wider project that includes construction of a new entry from Rathgar Rd.
