Henderson kids still in the game

By Justin Latif

Robert Williams helps pick up the pieces when kids get kicked out of school.

He is a tutor at Amokura, an alternative education facility set up by the Waipareira Trust in Henderson.

The school takes expelled students aged 12 to 15 and gives them life skills before they leave formal education.

"We put them on track so they're better for themselves and their community," he says.

Many of the students are learning to teach younger children sport skills at Henderson Primary. Those who pass get a Sport Leader Award and NCEA credits.

Kylie Hill from Sport Waitakere has been assessing the students and says it is a stepping stone to further achievement.

Henderson Primary principal Keith Tetzlaff is a fan of the scheme and says his students enjoy being taught by young adults.

"It's great because it's providing the children with role models," he says.

Mr Williams says its great to see the youngsters improving their lives.

"These kids are great. They are showing their parents and everyone else they can do it."
