Condition doesn't get St Dom's student down

By LEANNE WARR

Michaela Yee reckons she's just like any other kid. But the 12-year-old does have one major point of difference - primary lymphoedema. It means she must avoid injuries to her legs and treat cuts promptly.

Lymphoedema causes swelling and can occur at any age. It can be genetic or secondary to injury, infection, surgery or radiation affecting the lymphatic vessels.

Michaela's condition was discovered at birth but not diagnosed immediately. Both her feet were puffy and one leg was swollen. Michaela, who attends Lymphoedema Support Network meetings, got some relief last year after visiting a therapist. Compression bandages eased the swelling and her feet and lower legs were massaged. The results were significant and Michaela can now wear normal-sized shoes.

Compression stockings also help. "They're not easy to put on," the Massey resident says. "I have to wear special gloves and when I get new stockings mum has to help.

"The swelling sometimes worsens when she's playing soccer and squash with other students at St Dominics College. But that hasn't put Michaela off sports because exercise is also helpful for people with lymphoedema.

"She's very good at managing herself," her mum Rebecca says. "If she has a scratch she knows what to do.
