Arohanui students love mucking in

By Rani Timoti

Green thumbed Arohanui Special School pupils are doing their bit for the environment.

The students, who are all based in a satellite class at Flanshaw School, have been replacing stolen flax plants at Marlene Glade.

Teacher Sadh Bahadur says the area was originally planted out by the Waitakere City Council.

But thieves left part of the area bare.

Mr Bahadur's students were keen to put things right.

"It's about giving something back to our park," he says.

"Our school is about creating community and we want to get involved."

Tyson Shreen, 11, has plenty of questions about the project.
Dylan Marsh, 9, knows a good grounding is important for baby plants to flourish. Photos: James Madelin
Edmond Frimpong, 9, loves to get his hands dirty planting flax.
