Tu Tangata stalwart joins advisory board

By Leanne Warr

June Mariu is a new face on the Waitakere City Council's Te Taumata Runanga Maori advisory committee.
The former
Rutherford College teacher has taken over from Evelyn Taumaunu as the Maori Women's Welfare League representative.
A longtime league stalwart, Mrs Mariu has been involved with a number of other organisations including the Maori Education Foundation, the Maori Women's Development Fund and Te Kohanga Reo.
She has represented
New Zealand in netball and basketball  and was one of the driving forces of the under-21 netball teams.
Mayor Bob Harvey is among her admirers.
"She always appears to be absolutely tireless," he says. "Her life is one of offering advice and wisdom."
Mrs Mariu received a Queen's Service
Medal more than 20 years ago and was made a companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2005.
