Mason Bennett from St Pauls School in Massey is the winner of this year's annual soapbox derby at Westgate.
The youngster competed against 80 entrants from schools throughout the city last weekend in appalling weather conditions.
He is among the top 16 finishers who will now represent west Auckland in the national finals this Sunday at Kaipatiki Rd, Glenfield.
The overall winner will get a trip to the USA with one parent to compete in the Rest of the World finals.
The west Auckland heats, now in their fourth year, are organised by the Rotary club of Waitakere City.
They involve 21 schools from Kelston to Huapai.
Last year's event was won by "Jesse" James Cooper from Royal Road Primary who went on to compete in the US.
