Bruce McLaren pupils play with top brass
By Helen Laurent
Ten students at Bruce McLaren Intermediate are playing with the Auckland Primary Principals Association Concert Band.
The pupils started rehearsing with the group in September when they participated in the association's music course, joining students from 19 other Auckland schools.
Five have already featured prominently in association's concerts, performing in front of the band for an audience of thousands at the Auckland Town Hall.
Aaron Longville, Ethan Ensor, Matthew Rasmussen, James Sumner, Jackson Rush and Shannon Love all play brass instruments and enjoy the wide range of music they're getting to play.
"We play blues, classical, jazz and modern music," Ethan says. "It has been pretty cool and the performances were good experience."
All of the musicians are also members of the Bruce McLaren Orchestra.
Their teacher and conductor Rod McLeay says the association concerts have been a good experience.
"They have improved hugely, I'm very proud, the chance to participate in a public performance has been beneficial because it's given them a reason to play," he says.
