A programme designed to help secondary school students get jobs looks set to have a bumper fifth year.
Waitakere Secondary Schools Gateway broker Jacquie Brayshaw has been funded to place 378 students this year thinks the real number will top 500.
The scheme started in west Auckland in 2003 with six secondary schools.
Now there are 10 schools taking part and the number of students involved has also grown significantly.
The programme's broker works with employers to find job vacancies.
Students then work one day a week, gaining credits towards their National Certificate in Educational Achievement and a pre-trade or equivalent qualification.
Mrs Brayshaw says many employers see the benefits of the scheme.
Mt Wellington based Bishman Electrical Contractors has been involved with the programme since 2004.
Spokesman Bill Penney says the scheme programme opens students' eyes to possible career opportunities and gives them work experience. "We're opening the door for them and it's up to them to walk through it," he says.
