School prefects have been working closely with the Waitakere City Council to make sure their peers' views are heard at local body government level.
They've been taking part in forums and workshops with council representatives every three months.
The city is home to nine secondary schools and councillor Linda Cooper says the exercise has helped make relationships stronger.
Participating pupils were offically thanked for their efforts with a special lunch at the Waitakere City Council civic centre last week.
Each student was presented with a copy of Titirangi photographer Chris Hoult's new book Out West - A Photographic Journey Through Auckland's West.
