Making a splash at Laingholm Primary
By Helen Laurent
April Halverston looks forward to hitting the beach this summer.
And she'll be feeling a lot more confident after learning vital water safety skills in the newly refurbished Laingholm School swimming pool.
"I couldn't swim before," the eight year-old says. "But I can do a little now. I like swimming - it's relaxing."
The $23,000 pool upgrade includes a new filter and pump system, solar heating and security.
Almost $18,000 was raised at an auction organised by Friends of the School earlier this year. Donations were also been made by the Scott Wood Trust.
Teacher Suzanne Moores says the pool will be used for water safety lessons and as a training facility for the school's swim team.
"We are surrounded by water here so I think it's vital we learn," the former swimming instructor says. "It's a super exercise and a fantastic way to have fun. The kids are really excited."
The pool's grand opening on November 16 at 5pm will feature a sausage sizzle and various family activities.
