Surprise for Marina View athletes

Energetic youngsters at Marina View Primary couldn't believe their luck when top west Auckland runner Aniel Smith dropped by.

Smith was visiting as part of the school's summer athletics programme.

He gave the 30 kids a few training pointers about middle distance running before challenging them to a two lap race around the school track.

Smith slowly made his way to the front and only just took line honours from 9-year-old Cameron Ward.
