Morag Hutchinson

Principal, Green Bay High

While Morag is a proud West Aucklander she grew up in Sydney, was schooled at North Sydney Girls and secured her undergraduate arts majoring in politics and history at the University of NSW with the intention of going into journalism. Having visited Auckland as a child she returned in the mid seventies, found teacher recruitment was prominent and, as she said, “the rest is history! “I did my teacher training at Auckland Teachers College in Epsom completing a postgraduate Diploma in Teaching. From there it was to Rutherford College teaching history and social studies – a subject area where I have always had a huge enthusiasm.” Inevitably Morag’s personality, her values and capability also took her into pastoral care – early on she was appointed a dean – and into the wider debate of what leads to successful learning. From dean to deputy principal initially under founding Principal Eric Clark, Morag ultimately had nineteen years at Rutherford. An opportunity arose to become second principal at Howick College and with the massive immigration Auckland and Howick experienced in the mid nineties this was a time of incredible change and learning. “But my heart was in the West and I was delighted when the Green Bay High School opportunity came up. I came here in May 2005 and I love it! “The challenge for Green Bay High School is for it to grow community confidence in the school’s ability to provide quality educational quality for local families. There are some fantastic things happening through these doors that the community doesn’t know enough about.” Morag is strongly supportive of the schools growing extra-curricular programme. While performing arts has a strong tradition in the school, Green Bay is also developing a stronger profile in sport, a particular interest of Morag. A board member of College Sport, Morag has also recently joined the board of Sport Waitakere, and she manages a cricket team at the school. Morag is married to Michael, a senior lecturer in computing at AUT and they have two adult sons.
