Education the Waitakere Way
Over the last ten years, Waitakere City has become well known for its inclusive and collaborative approach and its multi-sector, multi-agency approach to problem solving. The Waitakere Way which has emerged, is about three way partnerships – central government, local government and communities working together to promote and enhance city wellbeing. During this time, a number of innovative, holistic and community driven processes, structures and programmes have been developed to address key needs across a wide range of sectors.
Local partnerships have also been progressed within sectors. In terms of education, the Waitakere Education Sector Trust is now seen as the major vehicle for collaboration within and across the education sector in Waitakere City. WEST is about citywide education and community needs, and shared benefits and gains. It’s not about individual schools or individual rewards. Stemming from an initial partnership between the City Council and the Waitakere Area Principals Association, WEST was officially launched in 2001 and has now developed into the key umbrella network for education in Waitakere City.
The purpose of WEST is to provide an information sharing forum in Waitakere City, that involves representatives acorss all the Education Sectors, including the Maori Community, the Pacific Community, Private Training Education Providers and Pre-School. A list of WEST Trustees is avialable under the "ABOUT US" tab.
