Waitakere Education Sector Trust - WEST

The purpose of WEST is to. . .

“Facilitate projects between Waitakere City Council, the Ministry of Education, Waitakere City schools, Maori and other education providers that will maximise educational and community opportunities and outcomes in Waitakere City”

WEST Trust deed 2001

With 75 schools, 160 early childhood providers, 26 private training establishments, 15 community education providers, 15 Maori education providers, 5 tertiary providers and the City Council, co-ordination within the local education sector is essential. The Maori community, the Pacific community, Tertiary providers, Private Education Providers, community education and pre-schools are now key WEST partners.
What is WEST currently doing?
Having initiated the development of a learning and education strategic action plan for Waitakere City, WEST is working collaboratively with the Waitakere City Council in furthering the development of an Education and Learning Plan that will meet the objectives of the education and community stakeholders of the city.

The purpose of the plan is to develop creative and innovative ways for educators and communities to work more effectively together to ensure the best possible learning experiences and outcomes for all people in Waitakere City (from early childhood education through compulsory schooling to tertiary and community based education).  The building and strengthening of strategic partnerships across the sector will be integral to the Plan.

WEST Meetings
The Board meets on a monthly basis, with the focus being about WEST's core business - the development of a Waitakere City Education & Learning Plan.  WEST continues to be focused on providing an education forum of information sharing.  Due to this shift in focus, the 2nd half of the meeting will no longer focus on Call 2 Actions as the majority of time will be used to update, discuss, and provide guidance to the Education & Learning Plan development.

Interested groups and wider stakeholders can still attend these meetings but preferably on an "by invitation" basis (contact the Chair if you would like to be included in the agenda).

Minutes of all meetings will continue to be distributed to the wider network.

WEST OUTCOMES

  • to create a better understanding of key learning issues and needs in Waitakere City.
  • to encourage and promote a shared understanding of good practice across the education sector.
  • to coordinate service and delivery between education and learning stakeholders and the community.
  • to share information on successful programmes - so you know what is happening, provide an extensive network for you and regularly update you.
  • WEST is working alongside the Waitakere City Council to support the development of a framework consistent with Life Long Sustainable Learning, which will be articulated in the Education and Learning Plan.
  • To promote and celebrate Waitakere City learning and schools - we are implementing a plan of action that raises the profile of WEST, celebrates West Auckland schools and promotes the education sector.
WEST website

WEST hopes to expand our databases and provide a range of links that will provide information to WEST people and interested others on educational providers and services in West Auckland. The website also contains a database of success stories.
